His mount looked at me and grinned. It was an unsetting grin, all jagged teeth and spit-flecked lips. The rider yanked on the reins that were affixed to two large rings in its upper lip and the grin disappeared, replaced by a flicker of pain. I looked up at the Decurion towering above me and realized, with a chill, that he was returning the gaze.

As a Decurion, one of his primary tasks was to raise his own cavalry. To this end, assembled behind us were the specially prepared souls he'd brought along who would serve as mounts, already equipped with saddles. They were hulking, restless beings obviously uncomfortable in their new form. Taking no more notice of me, the Decurion moved to the hair-covered crest of a hill overlooking a seething lava field and, with head bowed in concentration, the Demon Minor willed a complex, glowing glyph shot into the air above us. With the flick of his command baton, the glyph shot out and plunged into the lava. In moments, I saw large steaming shapes begin to emerge. Their incandescent bodies rose from the lava, tempering and cooling as they climbed towards us. Without a word the cavalry mounted their souls and awaited orders. They were like a nightmare army of golem, summoned forth from the very substance of Hell. And they were the perfect soldiers, devoid of independent thought, reflecting only the will of their creator, the Decurion.
